Prevent Chimney Fires This Winter
As we move into the winter season, your fireplace will be used quite often. If you haven’t gotten your chimney inspected or swept, you may still be able to get it in before the heavy snows start to fall.
This is a way of making sure that you have a clean chimney to avoid chimney fires. The buildup of creosote, a tar-like substance that is derived from the burning of wood, has been known to be a component of chimney fires. Taking precautions before you start up your fire for the first time this season is the best way to prevent chimney fires.
Here are a few additional tips to keep you and your family safe this winter:
The Type Of Wood Is Important When Starting A Fire
Your wood should be seasoned at least 6 months to a year. Wood that is not seasoned can put out smoke that can in turn cause creosote buildup. Burn hardwood such as hickory, oak, ash, or maple. Hard wood burns hotter, keeping the flames up and out of your chimney.
Burn A Hot Fire
Core temperatures of the flue gases should range between 600-1000 degrees. A probe thermometer will help measure temperatures. A magnetic thermometer can be attached to your stove or connector pipe. This type of thermometer will measure the outside which should range between 300-500 degrees for an optimal temperature. Keeping your fire at these temperatures will prevent the buildup of creosote in your chimney.
A Blaze Is Not Necessary
Burn a smaller, more controlled fire. A steady flow of smoke and fire will control the creosote that is let off.
Never Use Accelerants
It is dangerous to use any form of liquid accelerant in your home. Start with small pieces of kindling and layer that in your fireplace with some paper. As the fire begins to burn the kindling, slowly add additional wood in gradual sizes up to logs. This is the safest way to start your fire in a controlled environment.
Fire Extinguisher
Keep a Class ABC fire extinguisher in your home. Close to your fireplace if possible. You can purchase one at your local hardware store or big box store.
