Spring is Right Around the Corner: Chimney Checklist
Now that folks in one of America’s oldest cities are thawing out from an extremely cold, teeth-chattering winter, many in Richmond are already looking ahead to spring, which is right around the corner. And that often also means spring cleaning. So, while you’re storing those winter coats and heavy blankets in the attic, and planting vibrant Azaleas in your garden, don’t forget to add your chimney to your spring-cleaning checklist.
Why Spring Is Ideal for Chimney Cleaning
While your fireplace or stove kept your home warm, your chimney kept you safe. However, it was also collecting the remnants of your wood or gas fires. This means there is likely to be a buildup of creosote, soot, ash, and other debris. There may even be signs of animal entry, such as raccoon droppings or a decaying carcass. Cleaning out your chimney now will reduce or eliminate the risk of a smelly chimney in the warmer months, when humidity is higher.
Your Chimney Checklist for Spring
1. Clean the Glass Fireplace Doors
Winter fires often leave a cloudy, white, or black film on the glass. Use a fireplace glass cleaner, or make your own by simply mixing equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle to restore that sparkle. Avoid abrasive scrubbers, as they can scratch tempered glass.
2. Sweep the Firebox and Hearth
Clear out the leftover logs and bits of wood. Use a stiff brush to sweep the walls of the firebox. This not only looks better but also prevents old soot from being tracked onto your carpets during spring cleaning. Let your chimney sweep know if you have large pieces of unburnt wood or soot in the firebox, as this incomplete combustion can be due to poor draft or another issue that needs attention.
3. Remove the Ash
Wait at least 72 hours after your last fire to ensure ashes are completely cold. Vacuuming fine ash with a household vacuum can ruin the motor; instead, use a metal bucket with a tight-fitting lid and a small shovel. Store the ash away from combustible materials.
- Pro Tip: Sprinkle damp coffee grounds over the ashes before shoveling to keep the dust from rising into the air! You can also recycle ash into your garden, use it for compost, and even polish your silverware.
4. Check Exterior Masonry for Damage
Take a walk outside and look at the brickwork. Do you see cracked bricks or uneven mortar layers? Richmond’s “freeze-thaw” cycles can cause water-absorbed bricks to crack and mortar to erode, leading to costly structural damage if not caught early.
5. Inspect the Chimney Cap
Without climbing on the roof (leave that to us), check whether your chimney cap is still in place and whether its wire mesh screen is intact. A missing or damaged cap is an open invitation for rain, debris, and nesting animals to enter your chimney flue during the spring shower season.
6. Schedule a Professional Inspection & Cleaning
While fireplace cleaning is recommended between professional visits, it doesn’t replace an annual chimney inspection. The Richmond Fire Department urges residents to make fire safety a priority. During a chimney inspection, our CSIA-certified sweep checks for masonry damage, flue cracks, creosote buildup, and other fire, health, and structural hazards. Plus, scheduling in the spring means you’ll beat the “fall rush” when convenient appointment times tend to fill up fast.
