The History of Home Heating: From B.C. to Smart Technology

The hearth’s gentle glow has epitomized all that “home” is surely since the beginning of time. So, let’s take a look at the history of home heating from B.C. to smart technology, which we can enjoy today! When it comes to your fireplace and chimney needs, it is essential to know that the chimney sweep profession remains alive and well. We take pride in the essential work we do here at Chimney Saver Solutions. It’s a bonus that those in our profession never need to go home at night covered in soot!

The home heating saga began over a million years before there was a single chimney brush or sooty skies over London, England, as so famously depicted in Mary Poppins. The cavemen were among the first to discover the joys of warmth in their homes.

Evidence suggests that early humans may have begun managing fire intentionally around 1.9 million years ago. Central hearths are typically located in living spaces, often with roof openings to allow smoke to escape.

More than 44,000 years ago, Neanderthals living in what is now Ukraine constructed hearths using mammoth bones, indicating their organized use of fire and heating methods.

During the Neolithic period in Turkey, communities incorporated open indoor hearths into their homes and communal structures.

Early inhabitants of the region that is now Romania relied on portable braziers to warm their dwellings at the start of the Early Bronze Age in 3000 BC.

The year credited as the start of the Bronze Age in Britain, 2,500 BC, ancient Greek and Roman engineers advanced heating by developing radiant systems. The hypocaust—an underfloor furnace that pushed warm air beneath floors and through wall channels—heated baths and wealthy estates. Comparable systems also emerged in other cultures, such as early Korean ondol heating and innovations in parts of the Muslim world.

About 1,500 years later, according to Greek tradition, a shepherd on Mount Parnassus encountered a flame emerging from the ground. It was actually natural gas ignited by lightning. This sacred fire inspired the construction of a temple at Delphi, where the Oracle delivered divine messages.

Warmth at Home from 400 AD to 1700

At the beginning of the 5th century AD, with the collapse of the Roman Empire, sophisticated heating systems largely disappeared in Europe, giving way to simpler, more rudimentary fireplaces.

Clay stoves began appearing in AD 800, marking an early step toward more efficient enclosed heating appliances.

The first chimneys appeared around AD 1200, and central heating technology experienced a resurgence in medieval Christian Europe, particularly among Cistercian monks, who redirected river water and utilized wood-fueled furnaces.

As the Renaissance was beginning in the 1400s, masonry heating stoves emerged and were widely used by the 1500s. Chimney construction improved significantly during this era.

During the Scientific Revolution in the 1600s, French engineer Louis Savot developed a “circulating fireplace,” which elevated the grate to improve airflow and enhance heat circulation.

Heating in the 1700s and 1800s

During the 1700s, a pivotal era, English builders began drawing combustion air into fireplaces through outdoor ducts. In Russia, Peter the Great installed one of the earliest hot-water-based heating systems in his Summer Palace. In addition, during the 1700s:

  • Benjamin Franklin developed his famous high-efficiency cast-iron heating stove, later known as the Franklin stove, in 1741.
  • In Britain, natural gas derived from coal began powering street lamps and lighting buildings.
  • Scottish inventor James Watt introduced a steam-powered heating system in his own home, using a central boiler and piping.

The 1800s saw significant progress in home heating. English inventor William Strutt designed a warm-air furnace that heated outside air and distributed it through ducts. Around the same time, in 1805, fire-tube hot-air furnaces began to appear in French homes. Other historic milestones in the 1800s:

  • Edwin Drake drilled the first commercial natural gas well near Titusville, Pennsylvania.
  • Russian engineer Franz San Galli created the radiator, laying the groundwork for modern central heating.
  • United Gas Improvement Company (UGI) was established.
  • Thomas Edison patented an early electric heating device.
  • Warren Johnson created the first thermostat. That same year, the Bunsen burner was introduced, offering a controllable natural-gas flame and paving the way for gas-powered heating.
  • Dave Lennox produced the first mass-market steel coal furnace.

Heating in the 1900s through Today

Electrical home heating became an option in the early 1900s, thanks to Albert Marsh, who developed Chromel, a durable metal alloy crucial in the evolution of electric heating elements. He later became known as the “father of the electrical heating industry.” Other home heating milestones through present day follow:

  • Alice Parker patented an innovative central heating system in 1919, allowing homes to regulate heat more uniformly and conveniently.
  • Engineers introduced forced-convection wall heaters, combining coal furnaces, electric fans, and ductwork. Recessed wall heaters became widespread in mid-20th-century homes.
  • Robert C. Webber created the first direct-exchange geothermal heat pump in the 1940s.
  • The SolarWall system brought solar air-heating technology to the market in about 1991.
  • Homeowners have been able to control heating systems remotely via connected devices with “smart” technologies since 2000.
